If the model takes a pose with attitude I’ll concentrate on body language. It’s not easy finding an interesting pose that’s natural without being self conscious. Yeah, that business of painting from photos is a tricky thing at best. My own dismay comes from knowing that the figures I have painted from the pages of an ancient Playboy (one with my ex-sis-in-law) are never going to see the light of day. First off, it's illegal. Second, the thing is, they are so darned "perfect" it just didn't feel artistic. So, I thought, how about the one model I can afford? And, after several sessions in front of a mirror, I finally got some paintings done, but, dang! They are sometimes of a "contrived" nature, or (stupid boy!) get an erection, or just plain "flat!" (I can't think of a good term for that last artistic term)
I would paint m'dogs and cats, but they absolutely refuse to shed their "clothes" and so, ....

Fyi, I’ve been influenced by many artists including Abraham Rattner, Henry Hensche, Frederick Franck, etc. I also enjoy Charles Reid and Wolf Kahn, to mention a few that are still working.
Connell, if you're serious about working from the nude, why don't you try a local "life” class? Or, maybe check a college art department’s extension courses. Fyi, I've attended many reasonable workshops where artists split the cost of a model.
